Shanghai Culinary Walks
Culinary Backstreets is proud to partner with the highly rated UnTour Shanghai, offering visitors and expats alike the opportunity to truly eat like a local. The walks are designed to showcase the best of Shanghai’s hidden gems and historic back alleys, taking guests to authentic hole-in-the-wall eateries that are equal parts delicious, enlightening and exciting. With several different culinary walks, guests can specialize their eating experiences in Shanghai’s famous dumpling scene, hidden noodle joints, street food markets and much more.
We are happy to offer three walks in Shanghai:
Dumpling Delights
For more than 2,000 years, Chinese chefs and home cooks have been perfecting dumplings in all their delicious bite-sized forms. Carried abroad by Silk Road travelers over the centuries, dumplings are popular around the world, but nothing tops the original! From streetside stalls frying up potstickers to dim sum mansions serving steamers of har gow (delicate shrimp dumplings), we’ll taste the best dumplings Shanghai has to offer, including the city’s famous xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) while ducking into a wet market, park and old Shanghai neighborhood.
Street Eats – Breakfast or Night Markets
Choose from a Breakfast or Night Market Food Tour:
Breakfast: Wake up with the city to taste the Chinese breakfast of champions. We’ll mingle with water calligraphers and tai chi masters, explore traditional hawker cuisine at local street stalls and learn the true meaning of “fresh” at a wet market.
Night Markets: When the sun goes down, the woks fire up along the streets of Shanghai’s night markets. See for yourself why no one can resist the temptations of the city’s diverse after-dark delicacies.
Oodles of Noodles
A foodie’s dream, this tasting tour shows you Shanghai’s culinary underworld of noodle joints that have a cult-like following. Each stop showcases the city’s best mom-and-pop noodle shops – from homemade wheat noodles smothered in a delicious sesame sauce to knife-cut noodles in a simmered beef broth. Watch freshly made noodles get pulled out of a lump of dough and sample the best pasta this side of Italy. Trust us, you’ve never tasted anything like this before!
